ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ ജീവചരിത്രം.
എന്നും വൈകിട്ട് ഞാൻ കൂട്ടുകാരുടെ വീട്ടിലെക്ക് ഓടും. രാത്രി ആകുന്നത് വരെ അവിടെ ചെലവഴിക്കും. തിരിച്ചു പോരാൻ നേരം കഴിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് അവർ എന്തെങ്കിലും ഒക്കെ തരും. പല ദിവസങ്ങളിലും ഇതായിരുന്നു എൻ്റെ ഡിന്നർ. ചിരിപ്പിക്കാത്ത ലോകത്തോട് മല്ലടിച്ച ലോകത്തിലെ എല്ലാവരെയും ഒരുപോലെതന്നെ ചിരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു മഹാനടൻ്റെ വാക്കുകളാണ് ഇവ. ലോകത്തെ മുഴുവൻ ഒന്നടക്കം ചിരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള നമ്മുടെ സ്വന്തം ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ചാണ്.
1800 കാലഘട്ടം എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് ലണ്ടനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം ഒരു ഭാഗത്ത് വലിയ രീതിയിലുള്ള സമ്പന്നത വാണിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലമായിരുന്നു. അതേ സമയത്ത് മറ്റൊരു ഭാഗത്തേക്ക് നോക്കുമ്പോൾ തെരുവിൽ പട്ടിണിയുടെയും ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിൻ്റെയും ഒരു വലിയ ലോകം തന്നെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാൻ ഇല്ലാതെ അതുപോലെ തന്നെ വസ്ത്രം ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരു വലിയ ജനവിഭാഗം തന്നെ ലണ്ടൻ്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ജീവിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ആ കൂട്ടത്തിലേക്കാണ് 1888 ഏപ്രിൽ 16 ന് ഹന്നയുടെയും അതുപോലെതന്നെ ചാൾസ് ചാപ്ലിൻ്റെയും മകൻ ആയിട്ട് ചാൾസ് ബെൻസർ ചാപ്ലിൻ എന്ന് പറയുന്ന നമ്മുടെ എല്ലാവരുടെയും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ പിറന്നു വീഴുന്നത്. കലയും കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളും മാത്രം അനന്തരമായിട്ട് കിട്ടിയിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു കുടുംബമായിരുന്നു ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ്റേത്. അച്ഛൻ്റെ അമിതമായിട്ടുള്ള മദ്യപാനം മൂലം അച്ഛനും അമ്മയും ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ്റെ മൂന്നാമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ തന്നെ ഡിവോഴ്സ് ആവുകയാണ്. പിന്നീട് ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ സഹോദരൻ ഡിസ്നിയും പോയത് അമ്മയുടെ കൂടെയായിരുന്നു.
അമ്മ ഒരു പാട്ടുകാരിയായതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ പാട്ടുപാടി ആയിരുന്നു അവർ മക്കളെ നോക്കിയിട്ട് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. അതുപോലെ തന്നെ ഒഴിവുള്ള സമയങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം തുന്നൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തിട്ടും അടുത്ത വീടുകളിൽ പോയി സഹായങ്ങൾ ചെയ്തു കൊടുത്തിട്ടുമായിരുന്നു അവരുടെ ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ട് പോയിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ അവർക്ക് കിട്ടുന്ന കാശ് മുഴുവൻ അവർക്ക് ഭക്ഷണം മേടിക്കാൻ പോലും തികയാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിലൂടെ ആയിരുന്നു അവരുടെ ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ട് പോയിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്. അങ്ങനെയിരിക്കെ ഒരു സംഗീത വേദിയിൽ പാടിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതിനിടയിൽ അമ്മയായിട്ടുള്ള ഹന്നയുടെ ശബ്ദം പെട്ടെന്ന് നിലക്കുകയാണ്.
ആ സമയത്ത് തന്നെ സദസ്സിലിരുന്ന മുഴുവൻ ആളുകളും കൂക്കിവിളിക്കുകയും ആക്രോശിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുകയാണ്. സങ്കടം സഹിക്കവയ്യാതെ വന്ന ഹന്ന സ്റ്റേജിൻ്റെ പുറകോട്ട് ഓടുമ്പോൾ തൻ്റെ അമ്മയുടെ ശബ്ദം കേൾക്കാൻ വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് കാത്തുനിന്നിരുന്ന അഞ്ച് വയസ്സുകാരൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിനും അവിടെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആളുകൾ എന്തുചെയ്യണം ആളുകൾ ഇങ്ങനെ ആക്രോശിക്കുന്നതിനിടയിൽ എന്ത് ചെയ്യണമെന്നറിയാതെ ചിന്താകുലനായിട്ടുള്ള ആ ഒരു സ്റ്റേജിൻ്റെ ഒരു ഷോയുടെ മാനേജർ പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്നെ ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിനെ വേദിയിലേക്ക് ഇറക്കിവിടുകയാണ്.
അഞ്ചുവയസ്സുകാരൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ അപ്പൊ എന്ത് ചെയ്യണം എന്നറിയാത്തൊരു രീതിയിൽ ആയിരുന്നു ആ വേദിയിൽ നിന്നിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ പോലും തനിക്കറിയാവുന്ന വിദ്യകളെല്ലാം അവിടെ ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ പ്രയോഗിക്കാൻ തന്നെ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ഏതാനും സെക്കൻ്റുകൾ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ആക്രോശിച്ചിരുന്ന ജനങ്ങൾ മുഴുവൻ കൂട്ടത്തോടുകൂടി പൊട്ടിച്ചിരിക്കാൻ ആരംഭിക്കുകയാണ്. ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ എന്ന് പറയുന്ന ഒരു മഹാ നടൻ്റെ അഭിനയ ജീവിതത്തിന് അവിടെ തിരശീല ഉയരുകയാണ്.
വേദിയിൽ വച്ച് ശബ്ദം നഷ്ടമായിട്ടുള്ള അമ്മ ഹന്നയ്ക്ക് പിന്നീടൊരിക്കലും ശബ്ദം തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടിയില്ല. അവർക്ക് പിന്നീട് ഒരിക്കലും ഒരു വേദിയിലും പാടാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. അതോടുകൂടിത്തന്നെ കുടുംബത്തിൻ്റെ നില വളരെ അധികം മോശമാവുകയാണ്. ഭക്ഷണത്തിന് പോലും വകയില്ലാത്ത ഒരു രീതിയിലേക്ക് വന്നപ്പോൾ കൂടുതൽ സമയം അമ്മ തുന്നൽ ജോലികളിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ടിണ്ടാണ് അമ്മ ഭക്ഷണത്തിനുള്ള വക കണ്ടെത്തി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. അമിതമായിട്ടുള്ള ജോലികൾ കാരണം സദാസമയം ഒരു ടെൻഷൻ കാരണം ആയിട്ടും അമ്മ പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്നെ കിടപ്പിലാവുകയാണ്.
പിന്നീട് ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിനെയും സഹോദരൻ ഡിസ്നിയും നോക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നത് അവരുടെ അച്ഛൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള ചാൾസ് ചാപ്ലിൻ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. അതേ സമയത്ത് തന്നെ ചാൾസ് ചാപ്ലിൻ മറ്റൊരു വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്നതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ പിന്നീടുള്ള ചാപ്ലിൻ്റെയും അതുപോലെ തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ സഹോദരൻ ഡിസ്നിയുടെയും ജീവിതം വളരെയധികം ദുഷ്കരം ആയിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ഏതാനും വർഷങ്ങൾ മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുമ്പോൾ തൻ്റെ ഒമ്പതാമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ സാമ്പത്തിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ കാരണം 1898 ചാപ്ലിന് എന്നെന്നേക്കുമായിട്ട് പഠനം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടി വരികയാണ്.
അതിനു ശേഷം ചാപ്ലിനും സഹോദരൻ ഡിസ്നിയും അമ്മയുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് തന്നെ തിരിച്ചുവരികയാണ്. അമ്മ തുന്നൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തു കിട്ടുന്ന കൂലിയും അതുപോലെതന്നെ സഹോദരൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള ഡിസ്നി ജോലിക്ക് പോയി കിട്ടുന്ന ചെറിയ വരുമാനവും കൊണ്ടാ യിരുന്നു പിന്നീട് ആ കുടുംബം മുന്നോട്ട് പോയി കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത് ഈ ഒരു കാലയളവിൽ തന്നെ ജോലിക്ക് പോകണമെന്ന് ചാനൽ അതിയായ ആഗ്രഹം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എങ്കിൽ പോലും അമ്മ അതിനെ സമ്മതിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ്റെ ഈയൊരു കാലയളവിലുള്ള ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ആഗ്രഹം അഭിനയിക്കുക എന്നത് തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളും പ്രയാസങ്ങളും ആ കുടുംബത്തിൻ്റെ മേൽ വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും വർധിച്ചുകൊണ്ടേയിരുന്നു. ഏതാനും മാസങ്ങൾ പിന്നിടുമ്പോൾ തൻ്റെ അച്ഛൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള ചാൾസ് ചാപ്ലിൻ മരണപ്പെടുന്നു. അതോടുകൂടി ആ കുടുംബത്തിൻ്റെ ജീവിതം ഒന്നുകൂടെ ഇറുകിയതാകുന്നു.
എന്നാൽ ഈ അവസരത്തിൽ തൻ്റെ സഹോദരൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള ഡിസ്നിക്ക് ഒരു ആഫ്രിക്കൻ കപ്പലിൽ ജോലി ലഭിക്കുകയും അദ്ദേഹം അതിനു വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് പോകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഒരുപാട് നാളുകൾ പിന്നിട്ടിട്ടും ആ കപ്പലിക്കുറിച്ച് ഡിസ്നിയെ കുറിച്ചോ യാതൊരു വിവരവുമില്ലാത്തതിനാൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ അമ്മയായിട്ടുള്ള ഹന്നയെ മാനസികമായിട്ട് ഇത് വലിയ രീതിയിൽ തന്നെ ബാധിക്കുന്നു. പതിയെ പതിയെ മകനെ കാണാത്ത സങ്കടം കൂടെ അവരുടെ ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് വന്നപ്പോൾ അവരുടെ സമനില തന്നെ തെറ്റുന്നു. തൻ്റെ പതിനാലാമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ തൻ്റെ അമ്മയെയുംഏറ്റികൊണ്ട് 20 മൈലുകളോടെ നടന്നശേഷം ഒരു ഭ്രാന്താശുപത്രിയിൽ കൊണ്ടുപോയി അമ്മയെ അഡ്മിൻ്റ് ചെയ്ത് തിരിച്ചു വന്നു.
പിന്നീടുള്ള ഒരാഴ്ചക്കാലം ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ്റെ ജീവിതം ഏറ്റവും ദുസ്സഹം നിറഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ളതായിരുന്നു. ഭക്ഷണത്തിന് വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് എന്ത് ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് അറിയാതെ വന്നപ്പോൾ ബാലൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള 14 വയസ്സുകാരൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ വീട് മുഴുവൻ അരിച്ചുപെറുക്കുകയാണ്. ആകെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കിട്ടിയത് ഒരല്പം ചായപ്പൊടി മാത്രമായിരുന്നു. ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ മരണത്തെ നേരിൽ കണ്ട ദിവസങ്ങളായിരുന്നു അത്. എന്നാൽ ഒരാഴ്ച പിന്നിട്ടപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹോദരൻ തിരിച്ചു വന്നതോടുകൂടിയാണ് ഇതിൽ നിന്നെല്ലാം ഒരു ആശ്വാസം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കിട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നത് ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിനും അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ സഹോദരൻ ഡിസ്നിയും കൂടെ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ പോയിട്ട് അമ്മയെ കാണുകയാണ്.
അമ്മയുടെ കാര്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം അന്വേഷിച്ച ശേഷം അമ്മയെ ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ തന്നെ താമസിപ്പിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് അവർ രണ്ടു പേരും തീരുമാനിക്കുകയാണ്. പിന്നീടങ്ങോട്ട് എന്തുചെയ്യണമെന്ന് അറിയാത്ത രീതിയിൽ ആയിരുന്നു ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ അപ്പോഴും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. അങ്ങനെ ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ ഈ കാലയളവിൽ ഒരുപാട് പ്രശസ്തമായിട്ടുള്ള തിയേറ്റർ ഏജൻ്റ് മാർക്ക് അപ്ലിക്കേഷനുകൾ കൊടുക്കുകയാണ്. എന്നാൽ കാര്യമായിട്ട് ആരും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വിളിച്ചിട്ട് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ഏതാനും മാസങ്ങൾ പിന്നെയും കടന്നു പോകുമ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തേടിയിട്ട് ഒരു പോസ്റ്റ് കാർഡ് എത്തുകയാണ്. ബ്ലാക്ക് മോറസ്റ്റ് ഏജൻസിയിൽ നിന്നായിരുന്നു ആ ഒരു കത്ത് വന്നിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. എത്രയും പെട്ടെന്ന് നിങ്ങൾ ഇങ്ങോട്ട് വരിക എന്ന് മാത്രമായിരുന്നു ആ കത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്.
അതനുസരിച്ച് ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ അവിടെ ചെന്നപ്പോൾ ആ കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച നടൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള എച്ച് എ സെയിൻ ബർഗിൻ്റെ കൂടെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അഭിനയിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടിയിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു വേഷം ലഭിക്കുകയാണ്. ഷെർലക്ക് ഹോംസിൻ്റെ സഹായി ആയിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു ചെറിയ പയ്യൻ്റെ വേഷമായിരുന്നു ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിന് അവിടെ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. വളരെ നല്ല രീതിയിൽ തന്നെ ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ ഈ ഒരു വേഷം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്തു.
തൻ്റെ കഴിവിൻ്റെ പരമാവധി പ്രകടനങ്ങൾ കാഴ്ചവെച്ച് ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ മുന്നോട്ടു തന്നെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഹാരി വേണ്ടർ എന്ന് പറയുന്ന ആ കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായിട്ടുള്ള ഹാസ്യ നടൻ്റെ കൂടെ അഭിനയിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിന് ഒരുവേഷം ലഭിക്കുകയാണ്. ഫുട്ബാൾ മാച്ച് എന്ന് പേരുള്ള ആ നാടകത്തിൽ പ്രശസ്ത ഹാസ്യനടൻ ആയിട്ടുള്ള ഹാരി വേണ്ടറിനെ വരെ കടത്തിവെട്ടുന്ന രീതിയിലുള്ള പ്രകടനമായിരുന്നു ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ നടത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്..
അതോടുകൂടിത്തന്നെ ഫുട്ബോൾ മാച്ച് എന്ന് പറയുന്ന ഈ നാടകം വലിയ രീതിയിൽ പോപ്പുലർ ആവുകയും പാരീസിലേക്ക് വരെ ഈ നാടകത്തിന് വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് ക്ഷണം ലഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പാരീസിലേക്ക് പോയിട്ട് പാരീസ് പര്യാടനം കഴിഞ്ഞ് തിരിച്ചെത്തിയപ്പോൾ ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിനെ കാത്തിരുന്നിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നത് ഫുട്ബാൾ മാച്ച് എന്ന് പറയുന്ന നാടകത്തിലെ നടൻ്റെ ഒരു റോള് തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. തൻ്റെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവുമധികം സന്തോഷം നൽകിയിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു കാര്യമായിരുന്നു ഇതെന്ന് പലപ്പോഴായിട്ട് ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.
എന്നാൽ വിധി ഇപ്രാവശ്യവും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തോൽപ്പിച്ചു കളഞ്ഞു. നാടകത്തിലെ നടനായിട്ട് സ്റ്റേജിൽ കയറി അദ്ദേഹം തൊണ്ട പൊട്ടുമാറുച്ചത്തിൽ ശബ്ദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടും ആർക്കും ഒന്നും കേൾക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. തൻ്റെ അമ്മയ്ക്ക് വന്ന അതേ ഒരുഅസുഖം അതേ ഒരു അവസ്ഥ തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനും ബാധിക്കുകയാണ്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ശബ്ദം പൂർണ്ണമായിട്ടും നഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയാണ്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ജീവിതത്തിന് ഒരു ഫുൾ സ്റ്റോപ്പ് വീണു. തൻ്റെ അഭിനയ ജീവിതത്തിന് ഒരു ഫുൾ സ്റ്റോപ്പ് വീണു. എന്നത് തന്നെയായിരുന്നു ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ ആ സന്ദർഭത്തിൽ ചിന്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്.
എന്നാൽ ഏറെ നാളത്തെ ട്രീറ്റ് മെൻ്റിനു ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ശബ്ദം വീണ്ടും തിരിച്ചുകിട്ടുകയാണ്. ഈയൊരു അവസരത്തിൽ ലണ്ടനിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ഷോകൾ നടത്താൻ വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് ഒരു നാടക കമ്പനികൾക്കും ധൈര്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ഇങ്ങനെ വന്നപ്പോഴാണ് 1910 ൽ ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ അമേരിക്കയിലേക്ക് കപ്പല് കയറുന്നത്. 1910 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 10 ന് ചാർലി ചാപ്ലിൻ അമേരിക്കയുടെ തീരത്ത് എത്തിയപ്പോൾ അമേരിക്കൻ മണ്ണിൽ നോക്കിയിട്ട് അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞ ഒരു വാക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അമേരിക്ക കീഴടക്കാൻ വേണ്ടിയിട്ട് ഞാൻ ഇതാ വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന്. പിന്നീട് അദ്ദേഹം നടത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള ഓരോ ഷോകളും വലിയ വിജയം തന്നെയായിരുന്നു.
അമേരിക്കൻ ജനങ്ങളുടെ മുഴുവൻ ഹൃദയങ്ങൾ ഏതാനും കുറഞ്ഞ മാസങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കീഴടക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചു. അക്കാലത്ത് അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പോപ്പുലർ ആയിട്ട് നിന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു സിനിമാ കമ്പനി ആയിരുന്നു കീസ്റ്റോൺ ഫിലംസ് എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്. അതിൻ്റെ ഒരു സംവിധായകൻ ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിൻ്റെ ഷോ കാണുകയും അത് വളരെയധികം ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തതോടുകൂടെ ചാർളി ചാപ്ലിനെ അദ്ദേഹം സിനിമയിലേക്ക് ക്ഷണിക്കുകയാണ്. ഒരുന്യൂസ് റിപ്പോർട്ടർ വേഷമായിരുന്നു ചാപ്ലിന് ഈ ഒരു സിനിമയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്.
