What is cholesterol?
HDL is considered good cholesterol, while LDL is bad cholesterol. Cholesterol is a waxy substance. It is found in every cell in our body. Cholesterol is very important because our body needs cholesterol to make cells, vitamins, hormones, and substances that help with digestion. Our liver produces all the cholesterol we need. But sometimes, our eating habits can force our liver to produce more cholesterol than it needs. As a result, we have too much cholesterol in our blood. This combines with other substances to form a thick, thick deposit in our arteries. As a result, our arteries become narrow, which increases the risk of heart disease or stroke.
HDL is considered good cholesterol, while LDL is bad cholesterol. However, LDL comes in two types. The real villain when it comes to cholesterol and heart problems is a specific type of LDL. To measure this type of LDL, you need to ask for a test called an advanced lipid profile test. In this test, they look at the number and size of particles that carry cholesterol.

The two types or particle sizes of LDL are:
- Large, bouncy (pattern A)
- Small, dense (pattern B)
You should be concerned about small, dense LDL particles because they carry more cholesterol than the large, bouncy type, but they can clog your arteries. Small, dense LDL is a strong predictor of heart disease. Some people have low LDL cholesterol but high levels of small, dense particles, which can be confusing. Others have high LDL with high levels of large, floating particles. That’s why it’s so important to have a comprehensive lipid profile to fully understand what’s going on.
The best foods to lower bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein):
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Avocado
- Fish oil or cod liver oil
- Pistachios
- Dark chocolate (unsweetened)
- Almonds
- Walnuts
Other things you can do naturally to lower cholesterol:
- Take vitamin B3 (niacin)
- Exercise
- Take TUDCA
The most common cause of high cholesterol is an unhealthy lifestyle, such as:
Unhealthy eating habits
Lack of physical activity
Smoking.
LDL is not cholesterol, but low-density lipoprotein, a protein that binds cholesterol and triglycerides. LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to the blood vessels and cells, while HDL carries cholesterol from the arteries back to the liver.
The body produces about 3,000 milligrams of cholesterol. Why?
- Builds cell membranes
- Antioxidant properties
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Makes vitamin D
- Helps you produce bile, thus extracting fat-soluble vitamins
- Makes cortisol
- Makes sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, etc.)
And - Helps the body respond to a crisis (infection)
- It binds and inactivates bacterial toxins
- Helps prevent damage from microorganisms
- Acts as a band-aid to help the endothelial lining heal.
There are 2 types of LDL.
Type A (large buoyant)
*Normal, not involved in repairing damage.
*The last 2 days in the body
Type B (low density)
Since these are small, they enter the damaged wall of the artery and are involved in clotting and plaque formation.
*Last 5 days
Look at your triglycerides – if they are high and your HDL is low, you have more type B LDL. But if your triglycerides are low and your HDL is high, you have type A. Saturated fat increases type A, and sugar increases type B. A low-carb, high-nutrient diet can help you switch from type B to type A.
